Making a new brand work

Marley is one of the UK’s leading suppliers of plumbing and drainage products. Following its recent re-brand, we were briefed to create a brochure for a new range of Sanitary Systems, due for launch in June 2011. The design had to reflect both Marley’s new positioning as an innovator, and the new brand guidelines.

Our design reflected the preferences of the target audience – mainly architects and specifiers – by incorporating large ‘hero’ images and high-quality in-situ shots. We also included a fold-out product section: under the new brand guidelines, this used photographs of products, rather than line drawings.

To complement the Product Brochure, we produced a Technical Guide and Price List to the same brand template, using colour to give each its own distinct identity. Our creative is now being applied across all Marley’s product ranges.

We’ve worked with Marley for over 15 years, so they knew they could trust us to make their new brand guidelines work. This project represented three months’ work, and involved huge amounts of planning, project management and creative input. The result is a design that’s flexible enough to work across seven different product ranges, yet remain absolutely consistent and on-brand.

This was a very complex project to manage. What made it possible was our deep knowledge of the client and its products: it meant we could immediately spot and correct errors and omissions, ensure the product images, descriptions, numbers and prices all matched up, and select ‘hero’ images that gave the brochure the right aesthetic feel for its intended audience.

This project marked a major shift for our previous creative work for Marley. Apart from the ‘hero’ shots, the biggest change was working with photography rather than line drawings for the product section. There’s always a lot of highly detailed layout and proofreading work in a brochure like this, and it’s a real team effort between the studio and the account team to make sure it’s 100% accurate.
