Fresh ideas for tactical campaigns

Every year, St John Ambulance runs hundreds of training courses in First Aid and Health & Safety at Work. Although many are booked out months in advance, there are always some unsold places, as well as special offers, requiring tactical promotions.

The series of six postcards we produced in 2011 were typical of the DM campaigns we’ve developed for the South East Region over the last 15 years. They present a hard-hitting, even shocking, message in a simple, creative way that demands action without resorting to ‘scare tactics’. As well as the postcards, we created flyers and cards for use at exhibitions. Coming up with fresh, innovative ideas after 15 years is sometimes a challenge - but one we love to take on!

We know this client – and they know us - extremely well, so there’s a lot of trust there. At the same time, that long relationship means we have to work doubly hard to impress and surprise. What we always remember is that tactical campaigns are part of a bigger strategic approach; that gives us a benchmark for our creative work, and ensures there’s a sound rationale for everything we do.

These tactical campaigns are a regular part of our service for St John Ambulance. As well as the more ‘brand-led’ executions, we were asked to come up with some pure ‘price-led’ versions for special offers; the corporate guidelines give us the freedom to do this, while remaining consistent.

Over the years, we’ve done many campaigns like this for St John Ambulance. Coming up with a fresh approach after all this time can be a challenge, but it’s also a lot of fun – especially when it works as well as this one did.
