Bringing all the details together

St John Ambulance is the country’s leading provider of First Aid and Health & Safety at Work courses. For the past six years, we’ve compiled a directory for each of the seven Regions, listing all the courses available for the coming year.

Collating all the information is a massive job. As well as seven Regions, there are up to 27 different courses. Within each Region, there are numerous venues – the South East, for example, has almost 60 – each supplying nine months’ - worth of available dates. As if that wasn’t enough, we have to produce two different versions of the Directory: one for schools, one for workplaces.

We work closely with St John Ambulance’s National HQ to gather the information, then develop a concept, rationale and creative design for the schedules. Our design has to be visually appealing, but also easy to use and highly professional – and, of course, every entry has to be meticulously proofread and cross-checked with national HQ.

The whole point of St John Ambulance’s work is that anyone – everyone – can save a life if they’ve had the right training. So we deliberately worked with real trainers and staff, not models, to give these images the authenticity we knew they needed.

This project really demonstrated our ability to get maximum value for a client through detailed organisation, strategic thinking and practical logistics and management. In two one-day shoots, we produced a huge volume of authentic, high-quality images that will provide a flexible resource for use over all seven Regions – without the use of expensive models, studios or locations.

Working with amateurs rather than professional models meant we had to give very clear direction, and always aim to get the shot first time. Lighting, especially for the workplace shots, was crucial; we wanted it to look as natural as possible, but also achieve the quality that a national, highly professional organisation like St John Ambulance demands.
