Adding an Extra dimension

A subsidiary of West Kent Housing Association, West Kent Extra provides a range of support services to the Association’s 15,000 or so residents.

The managing director felt that, by 2011, the original logo (designed for the launch in 2003) had a ‘distinctly youth work feel’ that no longer fully reflected the organisation’s work, and we were asked to create a replacement.

Our new logo replaced the original ‘handwriting’ with a clean all-caps font (and reinstated the ‘E’ in Extra) for a more corporate feel. The four rings represent the four key areas of West Kent Extra’s work – Community Development, Resident Involvement, Social Enterprise and Training & Employment – and use colours from Social Enterprise project logos to add consistency.

The new logo appeared on the cover of the Annual Report, presented at the AGM, and is now being transferred to other West Kent corporate documents.

It’s great getting involved in great initiatives, especially when you know you can add value.

The brand we have created, combined with sound strategic advice has given this new product an excellent chance in an extremely competitive market.

The skill now will be to develop the rest of the range whilst keeping the appeal of the initial concept.

This is a statutory document, so there’s a lot of procedural and policy information, plus detailed lists of performance targets: there’s also text in eight other languages to meet accessibility criteria. Collating all this information and presenting it clearly takes time and close liaison with the client. But managing complex projects like this is something we’re very good at.

The client laid down fairly strict guidelines on what had to be included and how the brochure had to look and work. Our challenge was to create something that met these requirements, but was still attractive and easy to read. In some ways, that can take as much creativity as coming up with something highly conceptual.
